CALDWELL -- Some chilly dogs in Canyon County need a little warmth and comfort.
The Canyon County Animal Shelter has just about run out of used blankets and towels for its dogs and cats. The shelter relies on donations of the items to help keep their short-haired dogs warm and other dogs and cats happier.
"For some reason we've gone through our stock and haven't gotten a whole lot in," shelter director William Thompson said. "We've had some cold days and we've been going through them faster than we anticipated."
The old blankets on the cement shelter floors help dogs stay warm and also give them security. The shelter is heated but sometimes cools off to 60 degrees.
"They're more comfortable (with the blankets)," shelter spokeswoman Julie Dollemore said. "It makes them less stressed, and the less stressed they are, the more defensive they are to disease."
The shelter also uses towels for its cats hosted by PetsMart stores in Boise and Meridian. It also provides blankets or towels to foster "parents" who take temporary care of some of the animals.
Donors give towels, blankets and even small rugs or bath mats for the cause. The shelter sometimes gets used blankets from local hospitals.
"We're just running out of everything at this point," Dollemore said. "They're washed so often they're falling apart."
Donations can be taken to the shelter at 5801 Graye Lane in Caldwell, just off the Nampa-Caldwell Boulevard.
THIS HADN'T OCCURED TO ME
but a question from
patra prompted me to call Pet Smart and find out... you don't have to come out to the Canyon County animal shelter to make donations. Pet Smart on Franklin rd in Boise will also hold the blankets/towels/etc for the animals at the Shelter.
