Apr. 3rd, 2008 09:46 amI read an interesting article in Newsweek that has given me an idea for my final paper in English.
The article was about the lacking educational incentives in the current GI bill - and how there are already homeless and uneducated veteran's of the Iraq war. Apparently while back in the 1960's, 1970's, etc there was such good educational coverage for veteran's that they could afford to go to basically any university in the country....and now it is so lacking that it barely will cover (if it will cover) an education at a public state university.
I find this unacceptable.....there is no reason for it. Apparently there is a current plan up for observation that would cost about 2 billion dollars, but it would fund proper and good education for those that have served the country. This is less money than a week of the Iraq war....and some of the biggest nay sayers on the plan is head members of the military (you know, the ones that already have a good career), because they are worried that it would cause a drop in reenlistment....however don't these people deserve the right to reap the rewards once they have put their time in? Don't they think this would cause an increase in new enrollment, of motivated individuals that would be happy to serve their country - especially if it means they will have a good education to follow?
I am not a supporter of the war. I am not a supporter of a lot of the things the military is doing - however, I am a supporter of the individuals in our military, and what they stand for. My father was a marine, his brother was a marine, their father was marine. Their cousins were marines, I think one was in the army...basically my whole family has done their time, and the generation of myself, my sister, and our cousin just happens to be all girls :) Yes girls can join up, but it looks like none of us did.
What I am trying to say here, is that the people that are in the military usually do it because they love their country - and they deserve for their country to give them a bit more respect than the country is currently doing.
