Oh I agree! I will never buy a home that is with a HOA again - I was twenty when I bought this house, and had previously lived only in a house my parents owned, and then in two different apartments in Cali....I didn't really know what a homeowner's was when I bought this one, and they explained it as "people that make sure the neighborhood remains in good repair". I love my house, and I love my yard, and I love all the freedoms I'm allowed with the inside of my house.....it's a beautiful place to live....my main problems is that they are not allowing xerescaping in the front yard, it has to be "green grass", and I think it's ridiculous considering the amount of water needed to keep a green yard in this region...and it's environmentally irresponsible.
