Sep. 7th, 2005 03:56 pmThe cost of helping the environment.
I was at the store today, and I took the time to write some stuff down for you guys, so I hope you'll read it.
4 main items that everyone uses, garbage bags, spray cleaners, dish soap, and toilet paper. We all use these things, we all buy these things, most of us use versions of these that contribute to destroying our planet.
So, I was at Fred Meyers. Normally I don't buy those products at Fred Meyers, I wait until I'm going to the Co-Op, and pick up some eco-friendly alternatives there, but, not everyone wants to take the time to go to the Co-Op, and I can appreciate that. Being out in Caldwell, I can definitely appreciate that.
Anyway.
I decided to go down the home cleaning aisles and take a few notes on the products that had earth friendly alternatives, and compare the prices to the regular non-recycled/chemical containing/non eco friendly buddies.
Trash bags
Most of us buy Hefty or Glad bags. For a package of 15 Hefty it's going to run you 4.29 for the large bags, Glad bags, for the super strong ones, a pack of 16 (they appear to not come in packs of 15) it's a flippin 6.63 (yeah, because we all need to triple our spendings in order to get some little loops that tie together and a super strong bag. Thanks.)
You could have bought the Earth Sense brand though, at 2.79 for 15 large bags. Not only do you save a ton of cash, but you also help save the planet. Earth Sense garbage bags are made of 100% recycled plastic. The product is also perfectly good.
For dish soap, I normally use Ecover, however, I don't see that brand at Fred Meyers. I do however see a brand called Planet, that is basically the same as Ecover. It's free of dyes and perfumes, and it's hypoallergenic. It's also totally biodegradable and won't pollute the water with chemicals. It's 10cents more than Dawn or Palmolive, for the same size, but, I think it's definitely worth it. You don't pollute the planet, you don't pollute your eating utensils with chemicals, it's all around better for everyone, and for only 10cents more. By the way, I've had the same bottle of Ecover for ages, wheras with Dawn (what I grew up using), I would have had to get a new bottle two or three times by now. The savings actually does add up there, and I'm led to believe it must be a better product if it's doing the job more effectively.
Sun and Earth brand cleaner. I haven't tried this, but I currently use their laundry soap and it's awesome. It's all natural, therefore you aren't sitting their poisoning the air in your home as you clean. This makes it a safer products for yourself, your kids, and your pets. It's 3.19 for a bottle at Fred Meyers, compared to 2.59 for Orange Clean, 3.59 for Simple Green, and 3.17 for Lysol. 409 is just 2.89, but once again, I think the price difference is worth protecting your lungs and our planet.
Green Forest TP, a pack of four, 2ply. It's 2/3.00. which comes to 1.50 a package. It's all natural and it's biodegradable, so you aren't doing as much damage to the planet when you flush it. It's also made from recycled paper. I use this product at home. Quilted Northern is 2.99 for a 4 pack, Scott is 3.19, and that's just 1 ply, even Fred Meyers own brand it 1.99, so pricer than Green Forest. Obviously it's the best buy, and better for you, and the earth.
I think one of the reasons people still reach for the other brands, is because they are well known, and you probably grew up on them.
Break the chains folks, you don't have to stick to product loyalty, especially when you don't even know why you're doing it, except for that you've always seen it around. That's flippin brain washing right there.
