The cost of helping the environment.

I was at the store today, and I took the time to write some stuff down for you guys, so I hope you'll read it.

4 main items that everyone uses, garbage bags, spray cleaners, dish soap, and toilet paper. We all use these things, we all buy these things, most of us use versions of these that contribute to destroying our planet.

So, I was at Fred Meyers. Normally I don't buy those products at Fred Meyers, I wait until I'm going to the Co-Op, and pick up some eco-friendly alternatives there, but, not everyone wants to take the time to go to the Co-Op, and I can appreciate that. Being out in Caldwell, I can definitely appreciate that.

Anyway.

I decided to go down the home cleaning aisles and take a few notes on the products that had earth friendly alternatives, and compare the prices to the regular non-recycled/chemical containing/non eco friendly buddies.

Trash bags
Most of us buy Hefty or Glad bags. For a package of 15 Hefty it's going to run you 4.29 for the large bags, Glad bags, for the super strong ones, a pack of 16 (they appear to not come in packs of 15) it's a flippin 6.63 (yeah, because we all need to triple our spendings in order to get some little loops that tie together and a super strong bag. Thanks.)

You could have bought the Earth Sense brand though, at 2.79 for 15 large bags. Not only do you save a ton of cash, but you also help save the planet. Earth Sense garbage bags are made of 100% recycled plastic. The product is also perfectly good.

For dish soap, I normally use Ecover, however, I don't see that brand at Fred Meyers. I do however see a brand called Planet, that is basically the same as Ecover. It's free of dyes and perfumes, and it's hypoallergenic. It's also totally biodegradable and won't pollute the water with chemicals. It's 10cents more than Dawn or Palmolive, for the same size, but, I think it's definitely worth it. You don't pollute the planet, you don't pollute your eating utensils with chemicals, it's all around better for everyone, and for only 10cents more. By the way, I've had the same bottle of Ecover for ages, wheras with Dawn (what I grew up using), I would have had to get a new bottle two or three times by now. The savings actually does add up there, and I'm led to believe it must be a better product if it's doing the job more effectively.

Sun and Earth brand cleaner. I haven't tried this, but I currently use their laundry soap and it's awesome. It's all natural, therefore you aren't sitting their poisoning the air in your home as you clean. This makes it a safer products for yourself, your kids, and your pets. It's 3.19 for a bottle at Fred Meyers, compared to 2.59 for Orange Clean, 3.59 for Simple Green, and 3.17 for Lysol. 409 is just 2.89, but once again, I think the price difference is worth protecting your lungs and our planet.

Green Forest TP, a pack of four, 2ply. It's 2/3.00. which comes to 1.50 a package. It's all natural and it's biodegradable, so you aren't doing as much damage to the planet when you flush it. It's also made from recycled paper. I use this product at home. Quilted Northern is 2.99 for a 4 pack, Scott is 3.19, and that's just 1 ply, even Fred Meyers own brand it 1.99, so pricer than Green Forest. Obviously it's the best buy, and better for you, and the earth.

I think one of the reasons people still reach for the other brands, is because they are well known, and you probably grew up on them.

Break the chains folks, you don't have to stick to product loyalty, especially when you don't even know why you're doing it, except for that you've always seen it around. That's flippin brain washing right there.

Except for the toilet and laundry detergent, I'm happy to try other brands! The dish soap sounds good, I'll have to check it out.

The toilet paper - all we use is Charmin because it's way softer and we use it for tissues as well, and with a kid with pollen allergies in California, we go through a lot of it, and anything harsher, including that old stalwart Scott-tissue, shreds her nose, and, erm, a body part on my husband, which I won't even get into. ::yeesh::

As for laundry detergent, all I use is All Free and Clear. I've made the mistake of trying to use other brands and ALWAYS end up itching, and twice got hives from other brands. At this point I'm not willing to even risk hives to try something else :/

But garbage bags, house cleaner, and dish soap I will definitely try! Thankee for the suggestions! :D

Now go try watching a few episodes of SG-1 ;> That's my suggestion.. I think you'll like it, just, you know, genetically! ;>

eeeeek for hives and things.

Stargate I actually used to watch (not sure if it'd be the same one, since I don't know anything about -1, etc), and adored, but, errrr, I don't have cable or anything here. So no sci-fi channel. Had it for a while, but I never watched anything except sci fi channel and comedy channel, other than that everything else came on channel 12 (public channel, has news, family guy), so i ditched it =S

I actually used to always use Charmin until I started buying green products. It's what my family used to entire time I was growing up, except for my grandmother, I think hers was Quilted Northern, it had a little girl's face on the package. But, my dad, my mom, we'd all buy Charmin, and it must be a family thing because apparently my cousin is onto it too. I actually remember lecturing Sony over why Charmin is better than any other toilet paper. Heheh.

Must be SG-1 I was watching if Atlantis is newer, since I was watching it a year or so ago.

Actually, and don't get buttbent, but I find more amusing that you said it's fairly new, but that you buy it when it's on sale? Why that over whatever you used before?

I miss Fred Meyer with its northwesty Environmentally-friendly touches. We have Wild Oats here, but it is pricey because I think they know their customer base very well *sigh*

We have Smith's Marketplace (Smiths = Kroger = Fred Meyer = Ralph's), which is the same thing as Fred Meyer but the grocery selection has changed and prices (slightly?) gone up since the change.

This is slightly off-topic, but you use Lush because it's environmently friendly, right, Ki? Because I noticed that we have a Lush store at the mall here, and I think I'll be checking it out next time I'm there.

I've been choosing Dawn over other dish soaps because they use it for cleaning up critters after oil spills - so I thought it was harmless. I think I'll try one of the new eco brands next time.

From: [identity profile] velvetechos.livejournal.com
Yes, I thought it was too =/ But it has a lot of chemicals in it that pollute the water, which sucks, because, I cannot remember anyone ever buying any brand other than Dawn, in my household while I was growing up.
