Feb. 13th, 2008 07:09 pmTomorrow I go back to my normal work schedule.
Today concluded a two day seminar on the Essentials of Management, at the Courtyard Marriot. I think it was definitely worth every minute, we learned a wealth of information about policies and regulations applicable to workplace discrimination, reverse discrimination, laws regarding hiring, termination, due process, etc. There was also quite a bit about motivation, retaliation, communication, and so forth. A lot of group activities and speaking out - which is something I've been working on for two years now. I think I've come a long way, between counseling and basic "forcing-myself-to-do-it", when it comes to assertiveness and voicing my opinions in a group. It's still a work in progress, but I've noticed myself taking more action and more of a leadership role - I finally hired someone into the receptionist position at work, and I will be directly supervising her. I'm making it a personal goal of mine to establish an appropiate workplace environment and give her both positive commentary along with constructive criticism. I know that being a push over and being afraid to give negative feedback is big weakness of mine. I am not good with confrontation, but I am making it my business to improve, and I think starting on a clean slate with someone is going to make it easy to grasp that initiative and try it out. I spoke out a lot today, and I'm proud of myself.
We're preparing speeches to do in communications class, I think I will do mine on healthcare. I haven't spoken in front of a large group in over a year, and that was when I was teaching a sign language course weekly to my coworkers. I haven't done a speech in FOREVER and I'm a bit terrified. I'm going to suck it up and do it though, I was able to access my current grade in the course via the blackboard website, and currently I'm at 100%.
