Anyone here heard about VoIP technology? What do you guys think?

VoIP will be great when they get the bugs worked out. With cell phones all the rage as a main phone, we're now seeing how much telco's have been ripping us off for years, since they're now offering unlimited long distance for a fee. VoIP will make it impossible for them to charge for any sort of long distance (like to Europe from the US if they're also using VoIP...translation equipment for VoIP to traditional copper lines will cost though) because your telephone number will basically be an IP address.

Security will be an issue, because it's hard to hack a telephone number unless you're at the switch itself. Since the newer telephones will basically be small internet appliances, the risk is greater, though I really don't see it a problem that can't get fixed quickly.

I'm thinking that when VoIP gets straightened out and is a stable platform, we'll finally start to see video phones. That's all we need. :P

*nod nod* Some people already have conversations, via the internet, while watching the other person on cam, and the idea has been in movies for years. This will probably take a few years though, I don't really know much about, just saw a blurb on the news, and it caught my interest.
