This is Yoshi, a little dog who never had a chance. I first met him when I was part of an inquiry into his owner's manner of keeping dogs. There were a lot of dogs, and they were all extremely thin, flea-ridden and in need of a bath. The owner told me that she had purchased all the dogs in Texas, and that the seller had advised her to keep them very thin and lock them in cages at all times. She felt that she was providing them with good care. The woman was cited for improper conditions and given two weeks to improve her situation. When it was time to review the situation we found that all the dogs were gone: she said that she had given them all away. About three months had passed when I got a call from one of our local animal care agencies saying they had an old Chin in custody, in very poor condition. I went immediately, to find Yoshi. He was in pitiful condition, filthy and covered with open sores. It appeared that his jaw had been broken and left untreated. They told me that the dog had been living behind a supermarket on his own for at least two months. They released him to JCCARE as medically needy, and indeed he was. He was so glad to see me - just kept clinging to my neck and I kept telling him it was going to be ok, but of course it wasn't ok at all. The little guy had been through so much- he had, as well as what damage we could see, a terminal case of heartworm. So Yoshi and I went home. He settled on the couch with a sigh and a grateful thump of the tail and he was my constant shadow from then on. He stayed with us for about two months, but his sadly damaged loving heart could no longer support the burden of life and he died in my arms. He was a gallant boy who just never had a chance.
