The Missing Dollar!

You might be able to figure this out if you read carefully.

Three men went to a motel. The motel manager said a room cost $30, so each man put up $10 and went to their room. A little while later the manager realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellhop back to the three guys' room with $5. On the way to the room the bellhop couldn't figure out how to split the $5 between the 3 men, so he gave each one of them $1 and he kept the other $2.

This meant that the 3 men paid $9 each for the room for a total of $27. Add the $2 that the bellhop kept = $29.

Where did the other dollar go?

That riddle makes no sense. They paid $25 for the room after they got $3 back. The bell guy kept $2.

There is nothing missing.

In other words, they paid $30 the first time, were supposed to get $5 in change, but only got $3. So the bell guy kept $2.

$25 + 5 = 30

$25 + 3 + 2 = 30

It was rounded down, so the dollar got lost.

Look at it this way.

$25/3=$8.33, rounded down is $8.

Each man got $1 back, making it $9. $9x3=$27.

$27+2 for the bellhop=$29.

The $1 that was missing was the change which the manager didn't account for. So the hotel got the $1 (or .99 technically).

Blah, my math went totally the wrong way in making it work, because it wouldn't. But it was almost sound!

*blush*

I agree with Desiree, but the whole thing makes no sense to me mathematically. I guess that is why I didn't do so hot in College Math 101 and 102. BLAH! I can add and subtract, multiply and divide like a pro. Give me higher level math and you have the funniest joke since Dubbya got elected. BAH! MATH BITES!! Give me books any day!

That's a piece of cake;

It's a cheat.

At the end you say the 3 men paid $9, making 27 plus the $2 makes 29, but there is no extra dollar

What it is is this:
3 men pay $9, making 27 parted with
You subtract the TWO from the 27 that the bellhop keeps, and you get $25, which is how much money the motel has. It's a trick.

People don't stop and think about the maths and realise that you're supposed to subtract the two to get 25, not add the two to get 30 (because 30 doesn't enter into it. They pay 10 each, they get 1 back so they pay 9 each. 27. 25 to the motel and 2 to the bellhop.)

Easy, eh?

Math sucks.

I didn't even understand what the warlock guy had to say. XOXO
